Don was a 9-time winner of the Dandenong Club Championship. He lost his vision completely from an eye disease but still remained a strong chess player using a Braille board and his opponent telling him what move was made. Don was a good friend with myself and my mother who shared their weekly phone call talking mainly about football and the Geelong Football team that they shared a love for.

The friendly games ended with a few drawn matches that ran the clock down right to the end. Thanks to everyone helping to organise and make it happen. Let this be the beginning of a long tradition in the years to come.

Thank you everyone on a fantastic journey for this year’s club championship!
We knew last year’s champion Miodrag was the main candidate for the seventh title of our very prestigious competition but he did have a big task to beat our top junior Nolan (this year fourth place junior under 10 category in Australia).
Our best junior in this tournament Mason did his best tournament ever reaching 5 points which put him in the group of very experienced players sharing 4th place in the whole tournament.
We in Dandenong Junior Chess Centre are extremely proud of their results.
This year we have seen a lot of previous members returning to our club to compete in the club championship. Having 40+ participants in the last two competitions makes us confident that we are doing a good job at strengthening chess in our local area.
International Master Leonid Sandler will be conducting a simultaneous exhibition (often known as a “simul“) at Junior Chess Training Centre. Leonid has a distinguished chess career (biography) and is currently the President of Chess Victoria.
Date | Sunday 27th August – 1pm start |

From our Humble Beginnings in 1972, drawn together with the excitement of the World Chess Championship match of that year, a small group of Chess Enthusiasts gathered together to plan the Makings of a Chess Club.
That first Meeting took place in early 1973, with Bobby Fischer having been crowned World Champion a few months earlier.
On behalf of our current Committee and all 49 previous Committees we would like to invite all of you to join our 50th club championship.
